I am running to represent District 2 on Charlotte City Council because I want to be the ears that will listen and the voice that will speak for the residents and business owners that call District 2 home.
Over the past two years, our current City Council has refused to listen and represent the wishes of Charlotte’s citizens. When hundreds of voices and thousands of letters implored City Council to vote down one particular issue, the Council chose to listen to a select few, voting their wishes instead of representing the majority. The results of City Council’s decision cost Charlotte millions of dollars, while tarnishing the reputations of our great city and our state.
District 2 lags far behind the progress of the other six Charlotte City Council districts. We see continued growth and prosperity in areas of the city like Southpark, Ballantyne, South End, and the University area.
But where is the growth in District 2? What once was a thriving industrial area north of Charlotte’s Uptown and I-85 is now a corridor where the common site is empty buildings, abandoned factories, and below standard, overgrown properties. The most common type of restaurant in District 2 is fast food. Citizens who live outside of wards 3 and 4 north of Uptown generally must go outside of District 2 to visit an upscale restaurant. The new construction is in the far northern area of District 2, Riverbend Shopping Center, a planned community that will house Corning Corp and other offices, apartment homes, and a movie theater.
The whole of District 2 deserves focused, prioritized attention to advocate for improvements and progress that matches that of other areas of Charlotte. I will meet with and work with community leaders throughout District 2 to conduct a “needs assessment” of our neighborhoods, and I will represent the needs of our citizens. I will promote community involvement to reduce the continually escalating crime overtaking our city.
I promise to be a visible, approachable, and actively represent District 2 on Charlotte’s City Council.
